Why travel with a dog?
People with a dog, however, will know exactly why taking a dog overlanding is worth it. A dog is a true bonus to your personal life, regardless of whether you are alone, together, or with your entire family. When overlanding it is true that you need more preparation, that you might not be able to participate in all the activities you want, and that you need to bring more items in your car. But, with a dog, you are able to experience your destination even more in-depth! Your dog will always be ready for a walk, and as a result, you’ll even explore the more boring campsites with a different perspective!
For every first-time dog owner or every first-time overland dog owner, we have compiled a list of essentials to take with you! Take a look below at what we think is essential for a good and enjoyable camping trip or overlanding expedition!
Which essentials should you take when overlanding with a dog?
1. A dog collar & lead, preferably a long lead so he/she can run around whilst you do your own thing, like cooking or enjoying the campfire
First things first, you need to be able to walk your dog and keep your dog close with a collar and a lead. Choose the right type, size, and material for your dog and you’re ready to go!
We are totally in love with the ecological brand Tangle, as they create their products from old fishing nets. When you buy from Tangle, you are giving your dog a beautiful present, and you are supporting the fight against ocean plastic!
2. A (throw)-toy to play with your dog
Every dog needs a toy to play with! Having something to throw away, to pull, or to hide treats in is perfect for your dog after a long day of driving. As you might know from your own dog, it is great to have something to keep them active, to train their minds, and to release their energy. A simple toy, or multiple toys if you have the space, is perfect for any kind of lunch- or camp spot.
Oh, and if you are ready for the next level of playing with your dog, take a look at a dog frisbee or water sports. You never know what your dog might be into!
3. Puzzles to keep your dog occupied and entertained
Overlanding means you will spend a lot of your time outdoors, having a great time. But unfortunately, depending on the continent, you will also be driving long hours on most days. For your dog this isn’t particularly interesting. Keeping you dog entertained is definitely a challenge. Bringing dog puzzles and treat/food dispensing toys can keep it fun for you and your dog. Keeping his or her mind busy is essential for a calm dog.
4. Disinfectant for the rough and fun days
Don’t forget to bring some good disinfectant, preferably in a small spray bottle, on your trip. Your dog will probably explore the area around camp with huge amounts of enthusiasm, possibly causing some minor cuts. Besides that, you’re not always in control of the environment, before you know it another dog shows up, resulting in a rough playing session or some show of dominance. It’s good to have some disinfectant to clean the minor cuts and bite marks straight away, preventing infections.

Let’s get comfortable
5. A dog bed to sleep on in the car, or in your rooftop tent. Preferably also one that you can use outside, so waterproof and easily cleanable
Can you imagine the feeling of sitting outside, with an ice-cold glass of rosé on the table, a book in your right hand, and your left hand stroking your dog who is lying on the ground? To us, this sounds like a dream and we hope it sounds like a dream for you too!
To make life as comfortable as possible for you and your dog, we advise you to buy a nice, weatherproof, and easily washable dog bed
6. A blanket or dog sleeping bag to sleep in at night
Depending on your dog and where your dog sleeps at night, it is great to add a blanket or dog sleeping bag. Nimba, our little dog, loves her own blanket in the rooftop tent. She loves to cuddle up and hide her face. add more information.
Keep it clean
7. An extra towel to clean your dog after playing in the sand or mud
It’s a simple but oh-so-efficient way to keep your car clean at all times. At least, to a certain extent: a towel! An old towel can be enough to wipe your pup’s paws before he or she enters the car so that both of you can relax without worrying about the dirt.
8. Tick remover & flee powder or drops
It is inevitable that your dogs will meet other dogs when going on an overland journey, long or short. Other dogs are great to play with and great to keep your dog socialized. Nevertheless, there is also a downside to the other dogs, especially when they roam around the streets with no apparent owner. The risk of stray dogs lies especially in parasites and diseases, such as ticks and flees.
So, to make sure that your dog can play with other dogs without fearing anything like this, it is always great to bring a tick remover and flee-repelling product with you. There are many options on the market like a collar, drops, or powder to treat your dog with, so choose whatever suits you and your dog best.
