Silky BigBoy 2000 folding saw review

The Silky BigBoy 2000 folding saw lives up to the name, it is truly big. Luckily with that, it is also practical for on the trails. This camp saw stores away neatly in a compact storage back, but isn’t afraid to take on logs while on the trails. This Outback additional is part of Silky’s Professional series and is unrivaled in design and quality. The thick and rigid saw blade is overlandproof, and universal in usage. It’s perfect for clearing tracks where branches or logs are blocking the road, but you’ll also be happily using it to get firewood for the evening campfire.

What is the Silky BigBoy 2000 folding saw?

The Silky BigBoy 2000 Outback Professional 360 is a folding saw for the outdoors. It’s a high-quality saw made for bushcrafters, overlanders, and serious outdoor enthusiasts. The saw is foldable for easy storage and features a thick and rigid saw blade that’s been coated black with a unique nickel and tin blend. Combined with the non-set teeth, the saw has a long blade life and extremely efficient cutting performance.

In folded condition the saw is just 40 cm long, neatly being stored in a nylon storage back. When opened a curved blade of 36 centimeters comes out, locking into place thanks to a large and heavy-duty lever. The Outback edition features a composite handle made of a plastic-wood mix, giving the handle a comfortable and warm feel, and providing good grip and superior control of the saw.

The curved blade easily takes on logs of up to 18 cm in diameter. This means that when it gets tough, the curved design and taper-ground non-set teeth aid in efficient usage, making the work fairly effortless.

Would we buy it again?

Over the years we have used a range of saws on the trails and around camp. Most of these past saws have come from general hardware or camp stores, and never have they really lived up to our expectations. Their quality often resembled their price. Luckily we were able to upgrade to the Silky BigBoy 2000 a few months ago, and it has definitely taken our experiences to another level. The overall quality is a huge step forward from our past saws, and the difference is noticeable on every level.

During the past months, we have used the BigBoy to make us firewood, and clear tracks. Recently we were crossing the Luangwa Valley in Zambia and had to clear tracks more than once. On some occasions, we just had to remove some low-hanging branches to make space for our high vehicle. Other times we had to remove fallen trees from muddy tracks to continue. Every time, this folding saw outdid our expectations, and we were able to remove trees up to 20 centimeters in diameter with relative ease.

We believe a high-quality saw like this is an essential part of our gear selection. Oftentimes it outperforms an axe, and in general, we’ve used it in more scenarios than we could’ve imagined. The only thing to keep in mind is that with a folding saw like this, you should only use force when pulling, not when pushing (to not bend the blade). But once you get the hang of that, it’s effortless in use, extremely efficient, and very versatile.

Pro Tips

If you are using your folding saw on trees with resin, it might be worth bringing some vegetable oil. Olive oil, for example, is environmentally friendly and effectively removes resin from the blade.
