Rafiki’s wishlist

Adventure is running through our veins and we are dreaming bigger than ever before. In 2017 and 2020 we set-off on two major expeditions to the outskirts of Europe to discover its wild places and push our own boundaries.

Now, on our third major expedition, we are discovering the continent of Africa. Exploring remote regions, living amongst wildlife and wildcamping 95% of the time!

During the past few months we have been evolving. We are transforming from part-time adventurers to full-time explorers. With the Defender as our base camp, we are dreaming of a future on the road.

We will be visiting more remote regions, with more people, and keep on inspiring through Rafiki on Tour, and working on Ubuntu Magazine to support global nature conservation efforts.

With more continents to explore and an unstoppable desire to discover, we are ready to give it all we got. We are prepared to work hard, collaborate with adventurous organizations and together inspire a generation!

Let’s capture adventure!

Dream Overland Set-Up

With this new phase in our travels come new challenges and dreams. We want to thrive in remote areas for more extended periods, need to accommodate more people (up to six), and need a setup that lets us work from our base camp in relative comfort.

The setup we are realizing will include a re-design of Rafiki, our Land Rover Defender, and behind it will be an Off-Road Expedition Trailer. We will maintain Rafiki as our overland-capable truck but with an easier setup and more seats for passengers. The Offroad Camper Trailer will provide us with additional sleeping arrangements, storage, and a base camp that will be the backbone of our camp setup.

Land Rover Defender

  • Overland-capable truck – ready to depart on an expedition well prepared, without the need for the trailer
  • Seating for six people, and one or more dogs
  • Pop-top with sleeping arrangements for two
  • Interior storage cabinets
  • Convertible seating to transform the rear bench into a simple office/work setup
  • Capable of remote off-the-grid travel for 4-7 days (water- & food storage)

Off Road Expedition trailer

  • Off-road capable adventure trailer
  • Sleeping arrangements for four persons (pop-top and convertible seating)
  • Interior storage cabinets for clothing and outdoor gear
  • Comfortable office/work space
  • Comprehensive waterstorage solutions
  • Providing comfort in terms of cooking, shower, heater, etc.
  • Capable to form a standalone base camp for 5-10 days (water- & food storage)

Wishlist dream setup

Expedition Trailer

One of the most significant changes to our setup will be the addition of an Expedition Trailer. This trailer will form the foundation of our base camp and will play a vital role in the continuation and expansion of our remote off-grid travel.

It will be our supply-hauler, but also our office space and bedroom. Thanks to the trailer we will be able to explore further, host more people, start a family, work efficiently on Rafiki on Tour and Ubuntu Magazine, and live this lifestyle permanently.

Land Rover Defender 110 pop-top

After more than 1200 nights in our rooftop tent we are looking to upgrade our setup. With our dreams growing exponentially, and our needs ever-changing, we need to improve our setup to make it all work. In our opinion, adding a pop-top to a Defender is the best conversions you can do. So that’s what we will be doing. It will open up a whole range of possibilities that make life much more comfortable and sustain us for longer off-grid. The ease of setting up camp will aid us in capturing more adventure and inspiring a larger audience because of it. We are looking to join forces with a pop-top supplier in order to convert Rafiki into its best setup to date.

Lithium battery setup

We are always off-grid, period. That means we fully rely on our battery setup to power our adventures. The batteries keep the laptops charged and the fridge cold. A capable battery setup is essential and we require an upgrade. In our opinion lithium is the way forward, by providing enough capacity, whilst keeping weight to a minimum. To power our remote off-grid adventures we are looking for about 400 Ah of lithium.

Starlink

This piece of hardware is the biggest game-changer of the past year. Supporting off-grid and remote digital work by providing internet access wherever you are. As we find ourselves in remote places without internet all the time, installing a Starlink dish would completely change the way we work and travel. These days, we often have to find cell-service every now and then, to check in with the team of Ubuntu Magazine or to publish posts on our social media. With Starlink, we can stay off-grid, without needing to worry about cell-service. We can’t wait to connect!

Let’s join forces!

We are working hard to realize our dream setup to create a base camp for years to come. The Defender, combined with the off-road expedition trailer, will be our expedition vehicle, home and office. We will use the setup to accomodate our family while we explore the most remote regions of each continent. Living off-grid, inspiring our audience and support nature conservation efforts through our magazine.
