Bambulah Mosquito Net review

The people at Bambulah know what they are talking about. With more than 40 different mosquito nets in their collection, which are both functional and decorative, any bed or canopy is now safe from bugs. With the Kasih 4D, they have created an item not only useful for luxury bedding but also for overlanding purposes. At least, that is the plan. We put it to the test to see how it would perform.

With the horrendous stories of bugs and mosquitos in Africa we knew we had to get one thing before leaving home: a mosquito net to sit outside on those hot summer days without getting bitten or being disturbed by the many insects we share our camping spots with. Bambulah came to the rescue when we asked them which mosquito net we needed for a pleasant and safe trip. The Kasih 4D turned out to meet our standards.

After months of dedicated testing in different weather conditions and with a variety of bugs surrounding us, we are now able to give you a full insight in the Bambulah Kasid 4D and how we experienced it. We highlight our pros and cons, we present some additional tips and most importantly, we compare it to a dedicated awning room which is designed for overlanding.

What is the Bambulah Kasid 4D?

The Bambulah Kasid 4D is Bambulah’s high-end, polyester, box-shaped bed canopy with the size of a European king-sized bed. It has four doors, which give you the possibility to enter the canopy from any side. Finished with double-hemmed cotton borders and a sleek, luxurious design, the Bambulah Kasid 4D suits any bedroom or awning.

The Kasih 4D is relatively easy to install and use. The canopy is equipped with eight mounting points: four on the corners and four in the middle of each section. These mounting points have steel rings that can be used with the additional mounting set.

Specifications

Some important details of this mosquito net are the sizing and the mesh size.

  • Height: 240cm
  • Width: 200cm
  • Length: 220cm
  • Holes per square inch: 256*
  • Grams per square metre: 34
  • Denier: 75
  • Top border: 15cm
  • Borders (bottom & door): 5 & 3cm (double-hemmed)
  • Number of doors: 4
  • Door overlap: 60cm

Pros

  • High-quality needlework. Besides being extremely romantic, the high-quality sewing can be seen on the hems and in the corners of the roof.
  • Four entrances are a huge advantage when you need to enter the car or when one of the ‘doors’ is fully covered in bugs due to a light source nearby.
  • Universal use. We use it daily underneath our awning, but we can easily take it with us and use it in a hostel, for example.
  • The eight mounting points make it a very versatile and easily installed canopy. We currently use the four corner mounting points, but we can imagine using the other four in other circumstances.
  • Easy to install. As we have added spring hooks – take a look at the ‘Pro-tip’ section below – it takes less than five minutes to take it out of the cotton bag and to properly hang it underneath our awning.

Cons

  • Four doors are a huge advantage as you can read above, but trying to keep the bugs out of it proves to be quite difficult. Four openings are definitely more than one which you now have to keep an eye on.
  • It doesn’t include a floor, so any bugs, insects, or animals that are already underneath your awning will get caught once you close the doors.

Should you buy a dedicated awning room or Bambulah?

We are beyond excited and first and foremost thankful that we have brought our Bambulah with us on this trip. Although the cotton bag is quite voluminous in itself, it is as soft as a cushion and it is easy to stack it anywhere you want. As it is so easy to install, we use it almost daily. By using the mosquito net we are now able to sit outside for as long as we want, without sandflies, mosquitos, or other bugs disturbing a lovely dinner.

Compared to a dedicated awning room, which is more known to many overlanders, this Bambulah has some advantages and some disadvantages. The Kasih 4D is more versatile than a dedicated awning room, as you can use it over and over again. Even if you decide to pause your overlanding adventure for a while. It is also a lot cheaper, as the current price of the Kasih 4D is € 109,00. It is lighter in weight and most probably less voluminous or difficult to pack than a traditional awning room. One of the absolute advantages of the Bambulah is the spacious vibe it has. As you can open the doors very easily and the mosquito net itself is white, it feels like the canopy isn’t even there when you’re not using it. And, if you do close it, you are less visible to animals so they approach you much more easily. That has been quite the adventure in Senegal, we can say!

However, not everything is perfect of course. A dedicated awning room will most definitely have a better fit than the Bambulah as it is dedicated to your awning size and measurements. Additionally, we know there are many awning rooms with a sealed floor, which keeps the bugs from coming in from underneath your feet. With our ankles completely covered in sandfly bites, we would have loved to have a floor ourselves. Lastly, we do think a dedicated awning room is less susceptible to gushes of wind. The Bambulah is as light as a feather and although the door overlap is 60 centimeters, the two door panels often fly open leaving the bugs in easily.

In conclusion, however, we do completely approve of the Bambulah Kasih 4D as our mosquito net and canopy and we would definitely recommend checking it out to other overlanders.

Pro Tips

Using a canopy dedicated to luxury bedding in the rough outdoors of Senegal and the Gambia, we do realize we have asked more than we should have from this mosquito net. It simply wasn’t destined for this purpose, yet we tried anyway. Some adjustments were made before we left so that we could install the canopy properly onto our awning.

First of all, we have added spring hooks to our outer four mounting points. By doing this, we can hook them onto the aluminum bars of the awning. Besides the fact that the spring hooks have an actual hook, it also gives us the few centimeters extra that we needed to cover the whole awning with our canopy.

Besides that, we have added four loops of fabric to the lower four corners of the canopy, so that we can peg it into the soil. It prevents it from blowing away and it also provides a bit more of a shape to the canopy when the doors are closed. Before we pegged it, we often moved the mesh on accident with our chairs or table or while stepping through the doors, so this definitely guarantees are longer life for our mosquito net.

Lastly, we have added Velcro to the hems near the door panels, so that we can close it properly. We have experienced that this works very well in combination with the peg loops, so perhaps you have to add both to experience the advantage yourself.

All in all, the Bambulah – with a few adjustments – gives us everything we need. For anyone who goes to Africa, a mosquito net or anything similar cannot be forgotten. It will save your legs AND the beautiful evenings on the African savanna.

Bambulah Update

Bambulah now has a selection of Outdoor Canopies that are made especially for outdoor use. The mesh net is made of reinforced polyester, whereas the edges and the roof are made of canvas. With the combination of these materials, your canopy is now ready to stay outside the whole summer without becoming weathered. If we were you, we would definitely choose the outdoor canopies for our adventures.

As far as I know bed mosquito net can protect us only if we are inside the net but once outside the bed net then the problem starts. So best to fix mosquito net for windows and doors. Bed nets are wonderful while travelling and they are like life safer.
